It is used up to 5% in styrene butadiene resins and in acrylic latexes for textile, paper, and paint applications. Itaconic Acid has a long use history. There are new applications in paint and polymer industry mainly synthetic resins and acrylic latexes because of excellent emulsion stability and performance characteristics of adhesion. Itaconic acid can substitute succinic and acrylic acids for making acrylic latexes, plasticizer, additives, emulsifying agents, and paint chemicals. Consumer products may be textile, paper, plastic, paints, adhesives, emulsions and resins etc.
Itaconic acid is an intermediate or a comonomer in the synthesis of:
Acrylic Fibers: used as a comonomer, it increases the fibers mechanical resistance and affinity to dyes.
Latex (acrylic, styrene/acrylic, styrene/butadiene latex): It improves the resistance to abrasion and enhances waterproofing in the following applications: paper and card coating; carpet backing, non-woven textiles; adhesives and paints.
It is also used in Pan Carbide Fiber, paper coating and carpet-backing chemicals.
